Joann Karn
Highland USD #425-Highland, KS
Fund Accounting user

Title:
District clerk

Years at Highland:
33

What she likes most about her job:
I like the family atmosphere of our district. The support and willingness from our board and staff to step in where needed is awesome!

The biggest challenges of her position:

One big challenge was in 1976 when fire destroyed our high school and we lost all of our district records. The rebuilding process was challenging at times, along with being a little stressful. More recently with declining enrollment, Highland USD 425 and Midway USD 433 entered into a contracting agreement in hopes to maximize current resources to provide the best educational opportunities.

Why she chose this profession:
I enjoyed accounting and secretarial courses while in school. I also wanted to support the kids and help with the extra curricular activities, so you could say the profession chose me.

What it takes to be a successful district clerk:
I'm not sure what the textbook answer is for an excellent clerk. Every district has different needs, expectations of the clerk and job descriptions. Being competent, flexibile, and staying current especially with technology are a few of the basics.

How technology has changed the way she works:
In the past 30 plus years, I have gone from handwritten entries and a 10-Kay to balance the ledger to detailed computer entries with various reports to print out. Technology has reduced the waiting time to almost instant reception of information and communications.

Interesting facts about her:

I live in the small town of Highland located in northeast Kansas. Russell and I have been married for 30 years in which he has been a quadriplegic for nearly 27 of them. Life and living took on a new meaning after his accident and we've found there are so many great people, it is impossible to repay them.

Hobbies:
In my spare time I enjoy my embroidery business and assisting my husband in his projects.
